When submitting a tax return, you need to declare all of your income and gains – even if you’ve already paid tax on them – along with any claims to relief.
We’ve compiled a checklist below of common sources of income and relief to help you identify what you need to provide to us. This is not a complete list so please contact us if you have specific circumstances.
Self Employment and freelancing
- Details of all business income, including government grants and other receipts
- Details of business expenditure
- If you use Xero or Dext then please let us know when these are up to date with this year’s information
Employment
- All P60 and P45 forms issued to you by your employer(s)
- All wageslips for the tax year
- P11D form, showing benefits in kind provided to you by your employer
- Copies of tax code notices received in the year
- Details of any expenditure not reimbursed, or only partially reimbursed, by your employer, e.g. business mileage reimbursed at a rate lower than 45p per mile, membership fees paid to professional bodies, etc
Property
- Details of rental income and expenditure
- Mortgage interest certificates
- Completion statements for properties bought and sold in the year
- Please note gains on residential properties need to be declared to HMRC within 30 days of completion
Investments
- Details of bank or building society interest received
- Consolidated income statements in respect of managed investments
- Details of dividends, including dividend vouchers
- Chargeable event certificates on certain bonds and life assurance policies
Other income and capital gains
- Details of foreign income received
- Forms R185 and/or R185E showing income you have received from a trust or settlement
- Details of any other assets sold during the year, including the cost of the original purchase, e.g. shares, artwork or other non-property assets
- Details of assets you have gifted to others during the year
Child benefit
- The amount of child benefit received by you or your partner during the year. If this ceased during the year please provide the date
- The number of children for which child benefit was claimed
- Details of your partner’s income, personal pension contributions and charitable donations
Tax reliefs
- Details of pension contributions paid in the year, including those paid via employment
- Details of charitable donations paid during the year
- Details of loans you have personally taken out to invest in a trading business
- Certificates issued in respect of qualifying EIS and/or SEIS investments you have made
- Marriage allowance details – we require your spouse/civil partner’s name, National Insurance number and the date you were married/entered into the civil partnership
Other factors affecting your tax liability
- Details of student loans, e.g. plan type
- Scottish and Welsh tax rates, if your main home is in either of those countries. Please ensure the address we hold for you, as stated on your tax return, is up to date
- Details of significant time spent outside of the UK
