Bob has income over £50,000 and moves in with Linda who claims Child Benefit for her 2 children.
The children live with them for part of the week and with their natural father for the rest of the week.
Bob is liable to Higher Income Child Benefit Charge from the date he moves in. He lives with Linda and it doesn’t matter that he is not the children’s father.

Crystal claims Child Benefit for 2 children who live with her.
She and her husband are permanently separated. They still live at the same address but maintain separate households.
Crystal’s income is below £50,000 so she is not liable to the Higher Income Child Benefit charge.
Although her ex-husband’s income is over £50,000, he is not liable to the charge because they are permanently separated.
