HMRC admit as many as one in six may have paid the wrong amount of tax last year
HMRC are about to send out demands totalling £720m to people who paid too little tax in 2010/11. 164,000 of those affected are pensioners.
Last year when a similar thing happened the Government promised that this was a one off. However, HMRC are now admitting that these errors are still continuing.
Last year the government wrote of debts under £300, however this year they are to collect all amounts due. The concessions given last time are not to apply as taxpayers will have been informed of the errors within 12 months of the end of the tax year.
