Men worse than women at filing tax returns

Women are more likely than men to send in their tax return on time, an HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) analysis has revealed.

For every 10,000 tax returns received the amount that were late last year were:

Men – 394
Women – 358

As well as a gender gap, HMRC’s analysis showed a significant difference in filing behaviour between age ranges;

18 to 20 – 1,085
65 or over – 155

HMRC’s analysis found that the older you are, the more likely you are to send in your tax return on time.

Differences between workers in different industries were;

Agriculture, fishing and forestry industry -109
Lawyers and accountants came second – 219
Health and social workers – 262
Construction – 352
Administrative – 388
Information and communication – 390

And across the United Kingdom the figures were;

Northern Ireland – 301
Wales – 346
England – 374
Scotland – 391
